Jackson Hole Transportation - Drive, Fly, Ride

Jackson Hole transportation questions might include "how do I get there?" Good question. Since my home is in Denver, Colorado, I drive. It's an 8-9 hour drive from Denver, on cruise control, obeying the posted speed limits (well...for the most part). Even in winter, the roads are usually clear of snow. Sometimes the Interstate-80 stretch between Laramie and Rawlins is closed due to HIGH winds (there are wind farms there) and drifting snow. But, the majority of the time, the roads are good.

For those of you who also reside in Denver, there are two good routes. From Denver, travel north and either go straight to Cheyenne or make the northwest Hwy 287 cutoff at Fort Collins, to Laramie. Whether you go to Cheyenne or Laramie, you wind up on I-80 and head west. Your real choice comes at Rawlins. If you continue west on I-80, you'll drive to Rock Springs and then north on WY 191 to Jackson. Just slightly past Rock Springs is the White Mountain Wild Horse Herd. There's a sign marking the scenic drive about ten miles north of Rock Springs. It's a special thing to see truly wild mustangs running free. Add an hour of travel time to see these liberated horses. A sighting is certainly not guaranteed but that's why it's so special!

Should you choose to continue NW on Hwy 287, you'll pass through the Wind River Indian Reservation (home to the Northern Arapahoe and Eastern Shoshone tribes). Continue through the high desert badlands around Dubois ("doo-boyz")...rocks with shades of violet, red, orange, pink and gold. As you travel over Togwotee Pass, stop and sigh at the sight of the Absaroka Range to your right. These beautiful serrated mountains give birth to both the mighty Yellowstone and Snake Rivers.

The Jackson Hole airport is serviced by several airlines and brings people in from all over the world. Major rental car companies (Hertz (1-800-654-3131), Avis (1-800-331-1212), Budget, Alamo, and National are at the airport, while Dollar is in Jackson. This is for those who desire their own wheels. On my last visit, I saw lots of hybrid rentals, which made me happy for the clear Jackson Hole skies. Another Jackson Hole transportation option is bus service, available for those who prefer to ride.
